'Magic' hack to melt ice on windscreen mocked by experienced drivers

Driving experts have shared a tip for defrosting windscreens and melting away ice with the push of a button. But while some learner drivers were impressed with the "magic" hack, other more experienced road users made fun of it for being so obvious.

The tip simply involved turning on your windscreen fan and putting it on the max setting. Driving Test Success, which provides revision resources for leaner drivers, shared the how-to video for defrosting your windscreen on social media site TikTok.

Captions in the 24-second video, which can be viewed below, read: "Frozen windscreen? Put the temperature on high. Put the front windscreen fan on max", reported the Express.

It continued: "The ice will start to melt from the heat. Wipe away excess water and return the fan to normal." The clip has racked up around 67,500 views and more than 120 shares on TikTok.

However, reactions were mixed to say the least. One user wrote: "Wow magic the ice is gone." Another said: "Wastes more fuel. Just get [out] and scrape it off you lazy so and so."

Someone else wrote: "I didn’t know people didn’t know how to defrost windshields." A fourth pointed out: "It's gonna take some time before the air becomes warm...that engine needs to run for some time."

In reply to another comment asking: "this isn’t common sense already? This explains so much about the new breed of road user", the Driving Test Success account replied: "A lot of our audience are still learners."

The AA also encourages motorists to use their car heater to clear frost cover quickly. The motoring association advises: "Start the engine and turn on the warm air blower on the windscreen.

"Switch on the rear windscreen heater and heated mirrors, if you have them. Then, once it's done you can use your wipers. Turn on the air-con. It's not just for summer – it'll remove moisture from the air to stop the car from misting up.

“Don’t use your hands to wipe misted-up windows – you'll leave greasy smears and a diamond ring could scratch the glass. Use a lint-free absorbent cloth if necessary. Stay with your car the whole time while the engine's running."
