ORLANDO, Fla. _ The Orlando Magic will not reopen team facilities Tuesday for voluntary individual player workouts amid the coronavirus pandemic as they had tentatively planned last week.
The team now plans to reopen Wednesday, but even that is subject to change, according to the spokesman.
The Magic continue to await COVID-19 test results for players and staff who will be on hand for workouts, according to the spokesman.
The emergence of the pandemic shut down the NBA season March 11, and team facilities closed on March 20.
The NBA gave the OK for teams in markets where stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders were no longer in effect to reopen their facilities on Friday. The other markets were allowed to reopen under "limited exceptions," with teams needing authorization from local health officials that robust COVID-19 testing was in place. The league had asked teams not to test asymptomatic players and staff but was willing to grant exceptions in markets where community resources would not be affected as a result.
The Magic received authorization Tuesday from Dr. Raul Pino, the health officer of the Orange County Department of Health, that a robust COVID-19 testing program exists locally for healthcare workers, and that asymptomatic testing is taking place in the county.
The Magic then received permission from the NBA that they could test players for COVID-19, thus beginning the process of reopening for the workouts.
