TORONTO _ After the Orlando Magic turned in one of their most lethargic performances in years in a blowout loss Friday, coach Frank Vogel ripped into his team during an intense film-review session Saturday.
"I haven't been satisfied with our effort on a consistent basis," Vogel explained before the Magic faced the Toronto Raptors on Sunday night. "We don't have three All-Stars on our team where we can go out and not play with maximum effort every night. That's been disappointing and something I've challenged our guys to correct.
"There's a lot of things about effort," Vogel added. "It's not like guys are not trying. But making the hustle plays, your alertness, your focus, your attention to detail _ all those things are considered effort in my book."
His players responded Sunday.
Showing a competitive spirit they have too often lacked, the Magic shocked the Raptors, 114-113, at the Air Canada Centre.
Magic center Nikola Vucevic scored 25 points, collected 10 rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked four shots.
Point guard D.J. Augustin came off the bench to add 21 points and three assists.
Toronto (29-19) looked likely to rout Orlando (19-30) in the early going.
The Raptors took a 49-39 lead when Jonas Valanciunas made a free throw with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter.
But the game's tone suddenly shifted.
Serge Ibaka made a turnaround fadeaway jumper. Elfrid Payton scored on a layup from a pass from Vucevic. And then Vucevic scored on a layup after he collected a no-look pass from Payton.
The run continued.
Orlando scored a total of 19 consecutive points to take a 58-49 lead.
DeMar DeRozan ended the run by making a pair of foul shots with 30.2 seconds left in the half, but the Raptors went the final 6 minutes, 51 seconds before halftime without a basket.
Vucevic led the way with eight points, three rebounds and two assists and solid defense over the final 6 minutes, 20 seconds of the half.
In the final seconds before the halftime buzzer, the entire Magic bench stood _ a bit of excitement rarely seen lately.
The Magic led 60-51 at halftime.
With the victory, the Magic snapped a three-game losing streak.
They also ended a seven-game losing streak in Toronto. They had not won at the Air Canada Centre since March 26, 2012, when then-coach Stan Van Gundy employed a starting lineup of Jameer Nelson, Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu, Ryan Anderson and Dwight Howard.
The Raptors cut their deficit to 100-89 on a Terrence Ross 3-pointer with 5:53 remaining, prompting Vogel to call a timeout.
On Orlando's ensuing possession, Augustin swished a 3-pointer, extending the lead to 103-89.
But Toronto went on a 12-2 run to cut its deficit to 105-101 with 2:20 to go.
After Vogel called a timeout, Payton hurled a pass to Jeff Green, who scored on a layup.
On the Raptors' ensuing possession, Vucevic blocked a driving layup attempt by Kyle Lowry.
Seconds later, Green drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 110-101.
Toronto scored the game's next six points.
But C.J. Watson made a pair of free throws with 11.2 seconds to go to put the Magic ahead 112-107.
Lowry countered on the ensuing possession with a 3-pointer.
Vucevic made two foul shots to ice the game with 3.6 seconds left.
No one could complain about the Magic's effort Sunday.
