Magic beat Grizzlies, 101-99, have best start since 2009-10 season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. _ The surprising Orlando Magic just keep chugging along.

And not even an injury to point guard D.J. Augustin could stop them Wednesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Augustin strained his left hamstring late in the second quarter, leaving the Magic with just one healthy point guard, but the Magic still beat the Grizzlies 101-99 in a pulse-pounding finish at the FedEx Forum.

Evan Fournier scored a team-high 22 points for the Magic while Aaron Gordon added 19, including a crucial 3-pointer late in the game.

And Shelvin Mack, the team's third-string point guard, handled the bulk of the ball-handling duties after Augustin left the game. In 25 minutes, Mack scored nine points and dished out eight assists.

Memphis' Marc Gasol tied the score at 97 when he sank a jumper over Nikola Vucevic with 1:45 to play. After Terrence Ross missed a jumper on Orlando's next trip down the court, Memphis took a 99-97 lead as Gasol drove past Vucevic and banked the ball in off the glass.

But on the Magic's subsequent possession, Gordon caught a pass from Fournier and swished a 3-pointer from the left corner, putting the Magic ahead 100-99 with 51.7 seconds left.

Ross turned the ball over three times in the final minute. After his first miscue, the Grizzlies missed a layup in transition as Vucevic bumped Chalmers but wasn't called for a foul. Then Ross stepped out of bounds with 26.8 seconds to play.

But Memphis (5-3) couldn't take advantage of Ross' second error.

Chalmers missed a 3 with 17 seconds left, and rookie Jonathan Isaac hauled in the rebound before Jonathon Simmons was fouled, forcing the Magic to inbound the ball.

Ross threw in the inbounds pass, and it was intercepted. The Grizzlies pushed the ball upcourt, and rookie Dillon Brooks missed a 3-pointer that would've given his team the lead.

Ross then hit one of two free throws.

With their victory, the Magic improved to 6-2, their best start since they opened the 2009-10 season with a 6-2 record.

The Magic also snapped a nine-game losing streak in Memphis, winning at the FedEx Forum for the first time since Jan. 23, 2008.

Orlando had some good fortune. Isaac launched a long 3-pointer that banked in off the glass and extended the lead to 97-92 with 3:46 to play.

Augustin, who started Orlando's last six games with Elfrid Payton injured, got hurt when he made a fast-break layup untouched to cut Memphis' lead to 50-45 late in the second quarter. Augustin grabbed his left leg when he landed and then sat down on the court as his teammates defended 4-on-5.

A team official said Augustin strained his left hamstring.

Augustin didn't return to the game. His absence could be costly. Although he sometimes struggles to defend, particularly against taller point guards, opponents respect his long-range shooting ability. That, in turn, spaces the court for his teammates.

Payton is recovering from a left-hamstring injury of his own. Originally hurt on Oct. 20, he has stepped up his rehabilitation routine lately. Before Wednesday's game, he had another running and on-court shooting session.

The Grizzlies had an injury issue of their own Wednesday. Starting point guard Mike Conley, one of the Grizzlies' most indispensable players, sat out because of a sore left heel.

Trailing 73-68 late in the third quarter, the Magic went on a 13-1 run to regain the lead.

A key moment occurred with the score tied 73-73. Fournier saved the ball from going out of bounds in the Magic's offensive end. A few seconds later, Mack passed to Gordon, and Gordon scored on a layup as he was fouled. Gordon made the ensuing free throw.

A short while later, coach Frank Vogel subbed Marreese Speights into the game for the first time. Fourteen seconds after he entered the game, Speights drained a 3-pointer. On Orlando's next possession, Isaac sank a jumper, extending the lead to 81-75.

The game resembled a roller coaster: It was filled with ups and downs for Orlando.

The Magic took a 20-9 lead, and then the Grizzlies took control of the game, building a 36-25 lead after Tyreke Evans came off the bench and gave his team a spark.

Evans finished with a game-high 32 points.

But even that outburst wasn't enough to stop the Magic.
