The Orlando Magic have reached an agreement in principle with unrestricted free agent Jonathon Simmons on a three-year contract.
Simmons, a 6-foot-6 wing, should provide some scoring punch and defensive potential.
In 78 regular-season games with the San Antonio Spurs last season, Simmons averaged 6.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 17.8 minutes per game.
He also appeared in 15 playoff games this past spring, averaging 10.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 20.4 minutes per game. Simmons took on a larger role after Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs' best player, suffered an ankle injury.
On Thursday, the Spurs withdrew their qualifying offer to Simmons, making him an unrestricted free agent.
The Magic pounced on the opportunity.
Evan Fournier finished last season as Orlando's starting small forward, while Terrence Ross completed the season as the team's starting shooting guard. The Magic also have third-year swingman Mario Hezonja, rookie combo forward Jonathan Isaac and second-year swingmen Marcus Georges-Hunt and Patricio Garino to provide depth.
The Vertical and ESPN first reported the agreement between the Magic and Simmons.
