Magic, Amile Jefferson agree to 2-way contract

ORLANDO, Fla. _ The Orlando Magic and forward Amile Jefferson have agreed on a two-way contract for the upcoming season, league sources said.

The two-way contract will allow Jefferson to spend up to 45 days on the Magic's active or inactive roster during the 2018-19 season.

But Jefferson, who is 6-feet-9, will spend the bulk of the season playing for the Magic's G-League affiliate in Lakeland.

Jefferson's two-way contract will be for one year, a league source told the Orlando Sentinel.

An NBA team may have no more than two players on two-way deals, and Jefferson will become Orlando's second two-way player for the season, joining guard Troy Caupain.

Not including Jefferson and Caupain, the Magic already have 15 players signed to either partially guaranteed or fully guaranteed contracts who figure to make the team's regular-season roster.

Since 15 players is the maximum for a regular season, it appears that unsigned second-round pick Justin Jackson will not make the team's regular-season roster. Jackson, who missed most of his 2017-18 college season at Maryland due to a shoulder injury and didn't play for Orlando's summer league team, seems likely to spend the upcoming season with Lakeland.

Jefferson, 25, went undrafted in 2017 out of Duke and was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves at the end of the preseason. Jefferson spent the 2017-18 season playing for Minnesota's G-League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves.

In 47 games with Iowa, Jefferson averaged 17.8 points per game and led the G League in rebounding, averaging 12.9 boards per game.

In mid-January, the Timberwolves signed him to a two-way contract.

Any days Jefferson spends with Orlando before the start of Lakeland's training camp or after Lakeland's regular season will not count toward his 45-day NBA limit.

A two-way contract also can be converted into a standard NBA contract with the affiliate's parent team as long as the parent team has an available roster spot. During a two-way contract, a two-way player is permitted to sign an NBA contract only with his current team.
