A man in his 30s has been left in critical condition after a collision with a police vehicle.
Merseyside Police said the incident took place near the Alt Park Hotel Pub on the A59 Northway in Maghull at around 12.20am on Sunday.
The injured pedestrian was taken to hospital where he was described as being in a critical condition.
The officer was unharmed, according to the police.
Road closures remain in place on both sides of the carriageway to Switch Island and they are likely to remain overnight.
Road users are urged to use other routes if possible.
The incident has been referred to the IOPC for further investigation.
