The Tasmanian government has apologised to the family of a dementia patient reportedly found with maggot-infested wounds while in state care.
Mental Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff on Wednesday issued a statement describing the situation as "utterly unacceptable".
"I have spoken directly to the family and expressed how deeply sorry I am for what has happened," he said.
The 78-year-old man's condition was discovered by relatives during a visit to the Roy Fagan Centre on Christmas Day, The Hobart Mercury reported.
The dementia sufferer reportedly had leg injuries infested with maggots, prompting family members to question his care.
The man has since been admitted to hospital.
Mr Rockliff said the incident had prompted an investigation.
"Given the likely and understandable level of concern of patients and their family a broader independent review will be undertaken," he said.
"The care of every patient at the Roy Fagan Centre has been assessed since this event and I am advised no other care issues have been identified."
An initial report from the investigation is expected by the end of March.
