Maggie Smith to return to London stage for the first time in twelve years

Maggie Smith is returning to the London stage to star in a one-woman play.

The multi-award winning actress will star in A German Life, a new play based on the real life testimony of Brunhilde Pomsel, who once worked for Joseph Goebbels.

The play is based on a documentary of the same name which was made shortly before Pomsel died in 2017, when she broke her silence and told the story of her life to a group of Austrian filmmakers.

It will open at the Bridge Theatre in April, where it will be directed by Jonathan Kent. Anna Fleische will design the show.

Smith’s last stage appearance was in a 2007 production of Edward Albee’s The Lady From Dubuque, which was staged at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. She has won multiple awards for her work, including two Oscars, five Baftas, nine Evening Standard Theatre Awards and a Tony.

This year she will also reprise her much-loved role as Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, in an upcoming Downton Abbey film.

A German Life runs from April 6 to May 11 at the Bridge Theatre. Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10am on February 26.
