Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning novel 'Hamnet' to be adapted for screen

Irish writer Maggie O’Farrell won the Women's Prize for Fiction 2020 and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction 2021 for her novel 'Hamnet'. And now, 'Hamnet' will be adapted for into a film by Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao.

'Hamnet' tells the story of Agnes, who was William Shakespeare's wife, as she mourns the untimely death of her son Hamnet. It is noted that Hamnet was just 11-year-old when he succumbed to the bubonic plague. The story also traces Agnes' and Shakespeare's relationship.

Zhao will not only direct the adaptation but also work on the script for 'Hamnet' along with the author, as per reports.

Meanwhile, 'Hamnet' is also adapted for stage by playwright Lolita Chakrabartithe for Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan theatre. The play is currently being performed i Stratford from April 1 to June 17, and it will then be performed at the Garrick Theatre, London from September 30, 2023 to January 6, 2024.
