Women’s Premiership

Maggie Alphonsi brought down the curtain on her glittering rugby career by scoring a try as Saracens Women beat Wasps Ladies 30-0 at Allianz Park on Sunday to seal the Premiership title.

Alphonsi, who will now focus on athletics and hopes to represent Great Britain in the shot put at next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, won 70 caps for England and was an integral part of the team which won the World Cup last year.

“For us to win the league is absolutely overwhelming. I feel emotional,” she said.

“What I’ve achieved in my career is really special and I’m really pleased with how it’s ended. I’m going to enjoy the moment of winning the Premiership with my girls and it was a tough game against Wasps.”

Alphonsi has been training for the shot put since England’s 21-9 win over Canada in the World Cup final in August.

“I see my coach several times a week. I am trying to now focus on competing and I am now getting my schedule of fixtures,” she said. “I will be doing a bit of the indoor season and hopefully go into the summer season.”
