Magdalene Sisters movie convent in Dumfries is back up for sale

A former convent in Dumfries used as the filming location for The Magdalene Sisters has been put back on the market.

No price has been made public for Corbelly Hill Convent but it was previously put up for sale in 2008 with an asking price of £2.5 million.

The 44, 832 sq ft, Category B-listed building comes with eight acres of round near the town centre and is being marketed by Savills as a development opportunity with potential for homes, a hotel or wedding venue. Its sandstone buildings include a chapel.

The convent was commissioned in 1881 for the Nuns of the Perpetual Adoration and completed in 1884 by Messrs Pugin and Pugin of Westminster. It has since been used as a girls’ school, a temporary sheriff court and a museum.

Much of the Magdalene Sisters, the 2002 film directed by Peter Mullan about the abuse of women at a convent in Ireland, was filmed there.

A former resident, from the building's time as school, once claimed to have seen the ghost of a young nun there.

The last known owner of Corbelly Hill Convent was Bertie McNeilly, who tried to sell it in 2008.

Savills development director Richard Thompson said: "This is a tremendous opportunity to acquire an impressive building with a rich history. Corbelly Hill Convent has the potential for a range of uses, from a residential-led mixed use development, hotel and leisure or even a wedding venue, subject to the necessary consent."
