A notorious mafia gangster who has been on the run for nearly 20 years has finally been collared in Spain thanks to the help of Google Street View.
Gioacchino Gammino was convicted of murder in Italy but managed to flee from prison in Rome, in 2002, reported the Daily Star.
He became one of Italy’s most wanted fugitives but has now been caught by detectives who spotted him on a Google Maps Street View and he was found to be using the false name Manuel.
It was through the image on Google, that detectives in Italy were able to uncover his new life in Spain after he changed his name and opened up his own shop.
Gammino was discovered to be keeping his head down and had managed to escape suspicion for almost two decades in Galapagar, close to the Spanish capital Madrid.
The 60-year-old was using the name Manuel and opened up a grocery shop called El Huerto de Manu.
It was his grocery shop that led to his capture as detectives spotted him on Google Maps outside the shop.
Gammino had also been working as a chef at a restaurant called Cocina de Manu, according to the Mail.
It is not known if the former mafia man owned the establishment but images on the Facebook page appear to show Gammino dressed as a chef.
Cocina de Manu, which is rumoured to have been closed for some time, featured a menu with a design similar to the iconic Godfather poster.
Police say they were able to recognise Gammino because of a scar on his chin.
His eventual arrest came on December 17 with the former gangster asking how the police had tracked him down in his new life after he cut all contact with family.
Gammino asked them: “'How did you find me? I haven't even phoned my family for the last 10 years.”
The mobster is now back behind bars to serve his life sentence for murder.
Gammino, who was part of the Stidda clan from Agrigento, was also charged with drug trafficking and mafia association when he was previously convicted in 1989.
He was found guilty of murdering a passerby in Campobello di Licata after mistaking the person for being part of a rival mafia group.
This was the second time Gammino went on the run after he escaped to Barcelona following being charged with the murder.
