CHENNAI: The 164-year-old University of Madras will start its first-ever undergraduate degree programme Blended Bachelor of Science (BBSc) from the 2022-23 academic year. The curriculum for the science degree will be given by the University of Melbourne in Australia which is ranked 33 among the world universities.
Students will study physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and practical courses during the first four semesters and any one of the three major disciplines during the last two semesters.
“The university plans to create 30 seats in the high-end UG degree,” said S Gowri, vice-chancellor of University of Madras.
Whatever the students select as major discipline in the final two-semesters they will get an equivalence to BSc degree such as BSc physics, chemistry and maths by Melbourne University.
“Instead of going to Melbourne and studying for an undergraduate degree, students can do the same UG degree at Madras University. If needed, faculty from Melbourne University also will teach the students,” said professor Rita John, head, department of theoretical physics, Madras University and coordinator for the BSc(blended) programme.
Since they get equivalence from a top ranked university, they will be eligible to directly join research programmes like MS or PhD in foreign universities. The course will be offered at Guindy campus.
