Fancy living in Madonna’s old home? The South Kensington mews house she shared with Guy Ritchie in the early noughties is up for rent with Dexters for £8,992 per month.
Ritchie owned the property —a former coach house on Queen’s Gate Mews— in the early 1990s. Madonna moved in when the couple got together.
They had their first child, Rocco Ritchie, together in 2000, and married later that year, opting to stay in the two-bedroom property.
At the time, Madonna had just released her eighth studio album, Music, and starred alongside Rupert Everett in The Next Best Thing, which was released earlier that year. Ritchie, on the other hand, had just written and directed his second film, Snatch, starring Brad Pitt, Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones.
While living in the mews, he cast Madonna in the romantic comedy Swept Away, which was released in 2002 and widely panned at the box office.
Ritchie is understood to have designed the house’s stainless-steel kitchen, tucked into a corner of the main living space.
Thanks to the house’s celebrity owners, it even received some screen time itself. In 2003, Ritchie offered the property to his friend Matthew Vaughn as a filming location for Layer Cake, which was released the following year. It served as the home of Daniel Craig’s character, a drug dealer looking to retire.
The house was also featured in the 1970 crime drama Performance, while Queens Gate Mews appeared in The Bank Job in 2008.
Eventually, the couple decided they needed something bigger. They bought Ashcombe House, a Grade II-listed Georgian estate in Wiltshire in 2001 for around £9 million, selling the mews house at the end of 2003, according to Land Registry records.
After their divorce in 2008, Ritchie kept Ashcombe House, and lives there with his family today.
The Kensington mews house, however, is looking for a new tenant. Today, the 1,540 square foot house is arranged over two floors, with an open-plan living area downstairs —along with the Ritchie-designed kitchen— and two bedrooms and a study above.
Dating back to the 1860s, the building has a white brick façade, with two large, arched windows on the ground floor and a Juliet balcony above, adjoining one of the bedrooms.
There are, unfortunately, few marks of its famous former owners remaining – and little to betray that this house once served as Daniel Craig’s on-screen home. There is a neat row of plants outside the smart front door, wooden flooring, air conditioning, and a sedate colour palette.
