'Madness' in Glasgow park as hordes of police swoop on boozy coronavirus revellers

Police have moved in to clear out a UK park after dozens of boozed-up punters and rowdy teenagers descended in scenes described as "madness".

Locals have expressed their anger after crowds of 'covidiots' filled Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park on the hottest day of the year.

With social distancing rules being broken on a huge scale, teams of police moved in to break up groups.

Pictures showed them confiscating booze from revellers and checking people's IDs as groups mingled together.

Several officers manhandle one person and appear to restrain them on the ground.

The rule breaking in Glasgow's green space comes on a day in which the UK has seen bedlam and gridlock and beauty spots, including a major incident being declared in Bournemouth, a death on Worthing beach and a mass brawl on Exmouth beach.

Inspector Lesley Docherty at Partick Police Office, said: “The regulations remain that people should only leave the house for very limited purposes, for example for basic necessities, for exercise or recreation, for medical needs or travelling for work which cannot be done from home.

"The Chief Constable has made it clear that we are asking people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing and remember the purpose of these measures is to aid the collective effort to stay safe, protect others and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading.

"Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance and encourage compliance.

"We will use enforcement as a last resort only where there is a clear breach of the legislation."

Police have been forced to crackdown on antisocial behaviour at a third beach in the UK after arrests were made during large gatherings .

A dispersal notice has been issued for Formby Beach in Merseyside, meaning police can order members of the public who they suspect may cause trouble to leave the area.

It remains in place until Friday afternoon.

A similar order has been made for the piers at Bournemouth beach in Dorset, where a "major incident" was declared earlier after crowds flocked there on the hottest day of the year so far.

An identical order is in place in Orcombe Point in Exmouth, Devon after up to 200 people were involved in a mass brawl in front of horrified families.
