Morrissey is not a demanding man. All he asks is that venues at which he plays do not serve meat to their patrons while he is in residence, meat being murder. But Madison Square Garden could not manage to fulfil that simple request when Morrissey played the New York City venue last weekend.
MSG had agreed to go vegan for the visit of Morrissey, and in the public areas of the venue that was indeed the case – fans in the cheap seats were able to buy vegan food only from the concessions. Corporate ticket holders, however, were treated to the normal hospitality menu, including brisket sliders, meatball sandwiches, chicken fingers, cheese platters, and tuna sushi rolls.
The menu snafu came to light when 33-year-old Jessica Pearson sent details – including photos of the food – to the Gothamist. “This weekend I attended the Morrissey show at Madison Square Garden,” she said to the magazine. “Moz proudly announced that it was a historic day as Madison Square Garden went fully Vegan. Turns out it was vegan everywhere BUT the corporate suites. MSG offered up House Made Meatball Sliders, Hill Country Brisket Sandwiches, Cereal-Crusted Chicken Fingers, and Fresh Sushi Platters. Friends on the main floor ate vegan hot dogs. Thought you would find it amusing—though I’m sure Mr Morrissey will not.”
MSG has said the service of meat was an “oversight”: “We changed the menu in the public areas for the show on Saturday night and didn’t make the same changes in the private areas.”
