Madison County historians, community members gather to dedicate Revolutionary War memorial plaque

Historians gathered in downtown Richmond Friday to unveil a new memorial plaque recognizing Revolutionary War soldiers.

It includes the names of those with either documented proof of military service or who otherwise helped the war’s cause.

City officials and descendents of those named on the plaque came out to watch the ceremony, alongside local members of the Sons of the American Revolution.

There are currently 67 names on the plaque. Sharon Graves, director of the Madison County Historical Society, says she’d like to add more.

“Our hope is to continue doing research, there are 19 empty spots that we can fill up,” Graves said. “And we have one name right now that we're kind of looking at, we think we can put on there.”

The hope for historians like Graves is that the plaque will help raise awareness to local history preservation.

“We asked today for people to send us information of their ancestors,” Graves said. “And I have talked with a gentleman who came down from Indiana, ispecially for this. He has two ancestors, he's going to be sending us his genealogy.”

The society wants to use that information to write a book on Madison County’s Revolutionary War history.
