Madhya Pradesh: Wet weather makes it difficult to harvest kharif crops

BHOPAL: As showers continue even in October, farmers are waiting for dry weather so that they can harvest the ready crop.

The kharif crops, corn, soyabean and lentils have been standing in the wet fields making it difficult for the farmers to harvest the crop. Farmers are waiting for the weather to stabilize before they start cutting the crops.

There is also fear that standing crops of corn and soybean might decay.

Beniprasad, a farmer near Bhopal said, “corn crops in my fields are ready but I cannot take harvesters inside my field. It would not move properly. Manual cutting of crops is not only costly, labourers are not willing to work in the fields.”

Jivan Sahu, a farmer in Seoni, said that ,” For the past few days , we have experienced heavy spells of rainfall . I have not been able to enter the fields because of water logging. The crops are likely to be damaged .”

Senior scientist of Sehore Agriculture college Dr SK Tomar said that, “ this is a new problem for farmers. In case rainwater falls on the matured grain of soya bean or corn, it starts germinating.”

He recommends proper water outlets in the fields to protect the crops.

Farmers said that if they get hard sun shine atleast for one week, they would be able to cut their crops. They have already incurred losses because of dry spells of monsoon in July and then sudden heavy downpour.
