Madhya Pradesh: Suspect in Kitty Kumaramangalam murder held in Tikamgarh

BHOPAL: A suspect in the murder of the wife of former Union minister P R Kumaramangalam was arrested in Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh, late Monday night, six days after the killing in Delhi. Police recovered more than half a kilo gold and 300gm silver jewellery, and Rs 9,000 in cash from him.

Six days ago, 67-year-old Kitty Kumaramangalam was found strangled in her Vasant Vihar home. She was living alone. Police quickly zeroed in on three suspects – her long-time laundryman Raju Lakhan Kanojian, a contractual driver named Rakesh Kumar Raj, and their friend Suraj Kumar.

Not much was known of Suraj then. Police nabbed Raju and Rakesh but Suraj went on the run. Delhi Police found out that he had connections with Tikamgarh, and got in touch with their MP counterparts.

Police were on the lookout for him when they received a tip-off that he was staying with his in-laws in Baldevpura village in Jatara region, about 40km from Tikamgarh district HQ and 600km from Delhi. When police went to the house, Suraj tried to escape but was caught, Tikamgarh SP Prashant Khare said.

Kitty’s husband, the late P R Kumaramangalam, was the power minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led BJP government from 1998 to 2000, and was MoS law & justice in the PV Narasimha Rao government from 1991 to 1993.
