Madhya Pradesh: Schools reopening, but are there enough teachers?

BHOPAL: After the announcement of re-opening of regular classes, the biggest challenge for the schools is the availability of the teachers. The problem is more acute for schools where teachers have refused to join again despite schools asking them to do so.

Schools also admitted that the first few days, there will be problems for them to arrange teachers. Teachers who refused to join schools again said that they can’t go back to a job where there is a lot of uncertainty.

“I had to sit at home for almost a year when the first wave of Covid hit the country. I have seen a phase which I do not want to see again. Recently, I got a job in a private company. I have left the school teaching and moved on. In such a situation, it was not possible for me to go back to the same job,” said Akanksha Yadav.

Even several teachers after agreeing to join their schools have left the job citing that their future was not secured. “I was asked to run online classes. I agreed to work on a lower salary. However, the schools were not ready to increase my salary. I got a job somewhere else and due to which I have no plan to go back to teaching again,” said Preetpal Singh.

Even school owners felt that paucity of teachers will be a big challenge for them. “There is no dearth of teachers for jobs. Biggest problem is the quality of the teachers which we had before Covid. Now, those deserving candidates are demanding higher salaries which we can’t afford as campuses were closed for the past over a year. We have to make a compromise for a couple of weeks,” said a school owner without quoting his name.
