Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board takes stock of bio med waste disposal preparations for third wave

BHOPAL: After corona cases coming down to single digit, the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) is reviewing its preparation for the suspected third corona wave and at the same time is ensuring proper disposal of the bio medical waste generated in the ongoing vaccination drive in Bhopal.

MP pollution control board Bhopal, regional officer, Brijesh Sharma said, in the vaccination drive from March this year, 2 tons of biomedical waste including syringes, needles, vials, cotton have been generated in the city so far.

Waste material is disinfected, shredded, autoclaved and incinerated through medical waste treatment facility. There are three common bio medical waste treatment facilities available for Bhopal, Sehore and Vidisha, he added.

Besides, the pollution control board officials are in constant touch with the health authorities for the proper disposal of corona bio medical waste, which has come down to almost nil these days. But when the waste is generated it needs to be disposed of as per the guidelines of the central pollution control board.

Five hundred metric tons of corona biomedical waste was generated in Bhopal from March 2020 to May this year. Pollution control board officials informed there are five facilities in satellite towns and cities adjoining Bhopal that collect, incinerate and treat the bio medical waste.

Officials said, corona waste needs to be packed in a double layer yellow bag by the hospitals and sent for disposal. The ones disposing or treating the waste must be in PPE kits. Hospitals in Bhopal have tied up with one or the other facility for collection and disposal of its bio medical waste.

Anything that came in contact with the corona patients including saline bottles, PPE kit, hand gloves, face masks, napkins, face shields or head cover comes under bio medical waste.

The hospital beds are being increased for the third wave. In the process, the pollution control board is apprising the health department and hospital authorities about the process needs to be followed for the disposal of biomedical waste, officials added
