Madhya Pradesh police foil bid for 'supari' killing of Kolkata lawyer

BHOPAL/KOLKATA: Madhya Pradesh police on Wednesday foiled a plan that was hatched to kill a high-profile lawyer in Kolkata.

Credit goes to the Gwalior crime branch, said a police officer lauding their efforts.

He was all set to board a train towards his target while police arrested him.

It all started with the arrest of a 19-year-old boy Neeraj Jaat who the police zeroed in for flaunting his arms on social media.

While going through the details of his WhatsApp chats, Gwalior Police came across the contract that was given to him by one Pawan Rai.

The chats included talks of recce, coming down to Kolkata and executing the murder of someone near Barrackpore.

Rai had reportedly promised Jat Rs 5 lakh for the job.

Subsequently, based on information provided by the Gwalior crime branch, the Kolkata’s Anti Rowdy Section of detective department arrested Rai – a small-time trader from Beliaghata railway quarter for allegedly awarding a supari killing contract of a Kolkata-based lawyer to Neeraj Jat. Rai’s aide is still absconding.

Though cops refused to disclose the lawyer’s identity, they said they are in touch with him. The lawyer was unable to recall the connection with Rai, said police. Kolkata Police might visit Gwalior to question Neeraj.

Gwalior SP Amit Sanghi told media that the accused was a close relative of gangster Harendra Rana.

Crime branch team Amit Sharma, Archana Kansana, Pradeep Yadav and many other police officers had a key role in the arrest. Three firearms including a pistol and live cartridges were confiscated from Neeraj’s possession.
