Madhya Pradesh panchayat polls: 2 lakh nominations expected on last day today

BHOPAL: More than 2 lakh nominations for different posts are expected in a single day on June 6 for panchayat polls as it is the last day for filling nominations.

In all, there are around 4 lakh different posts for which elections have been announced including posts of 875 district panchayat members, 6,771 janpad panchayat members, 22,921 sarpanchs, and 3,63,726 panchs.

So far 1,879 have filed nominations for contesting as district panchayat member, 7,198 have filed nomination for contesting against the post of janpad panchayat member, 38,251 have filed nominations for contesting against the post of sarpanch and 34266 have filed nomination for contesting against the post of panch in village panchayats. Overall, around 81,594 nominations were filed till June 4, no nominations were filed on June 5, as it was Sunday.

Sources said that of the 4 lakh posts, around 3.6 lakh are posts of panchs and only around 34,000 people have filed nominations. But in case of panchs, a large number of posts go un-contested as against these posts many people do not file nominations. At least 2 lakh nominations are expected on the last of nomination which is June 6. Nominations for contesting in panchayat polls had started from May 30, in the state.
