Madhya Pradesh: Olympic glory smoothens rough road to Vivek Sagar’s home

BHOPAL: When Olympics bronze medalist Vivek Sagar goes home this time, a smooth ride awaits him — for the first time in his life.

On November 6, TOI had reported how the road leading to the Olympian’s house in Chandon village is a bumpy, muddy bone-rattler. The administration has now begun concretising the kuchha road.

Vivek’s family has thanked the government for this gesture. “It is good to see that a proper road is coming up in front of my house. I am happy,” said the athlete.

Chandon is on the outskirts of the ordnance factory near Itarsi. You have to pass through the factory to reach the village. This road is fine, but as soon as you cross the factory boundary, you hit a kuccha road that sets your teeth on edge.

New road is a big relief: Vivek’s kin

If it rains heavily, as it has been for the past fortnight, it turns impassable. Vivek’s father, schoolteacher Rohit Sagar, was often forced to take leave from work for this. “It was impossible to commute during heavy rains. Getting a metallic road now is a big thing,” he said. Vivek’s family said they used to dread the rains because of the kuccha road. “Several times, we couldn’t even step out of our home. The new road will be a big relief to us. This will help our neighbours too,” said Vivek’s elder brother Vidya Sagar.
