INDORE: At least four Class-5 girl students drowned while taking a bath in a canal in Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday morning, police said.
The deceased were identified as Vaishali Singh, Pratigya, Divyanshi and Anjana.
They were students of an ashram cum boarding school facility, being run by a charitable trust in Kothi village near Omkareshwar.
The girls hailed from Khargone and Barwani districts, they said.
According to officials, they went to take a bath along with other classmates.
“While taking a bath, one of the girls started drowning. The other three tried to save her and followed the suit,” Omkareshwar police station in-charge Balram Singh Chouhan said.
Chouhan said that their classmates raised an alarm and informed the ashram authorities about the incident, following which police and rescue teams were alerted.
Upon receiving information, senior officials from Khandwa district administration rushed to the spot and directed the rescue operation.
“Divers later fished out the bodies which were sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examination,” he said, adding that further investigation into the matter is under way.
