Madhya Pradesh: Fake marriage gang busted in Ratlam district

INDORE: Police has busted a four-member gang including a female involved in duping people by faking marriage with a complainant and fleeing with valuables in Alot area of Ratlam district.

Police, acting on a complaint of a 30-year-old man named Kalu Singh, arrested four people while another is absconding, police said.

Complainant Singh told Alot police that the accused had duped him to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh cash and jewellery in the name of getting him married, police said.

Complainant resides with his ailing mother and had been looking for a bride after the death of his first wife. In August, accused Pawan arranged a marriage for the victim with one Babita Thakur, who had come with an entirely fake family for the function, police said.

Victim paid Rs 1.5 lakh to the fake parents of the bride. However, after the ‘marriage’ Babita complained of ill health, and on pretext of some work at her house fled with Mangalsutra and silver anklet, police said.

When she didn’t return and the victim called Babita’s ‘mother’, he came to know the truth, police said.

Victim then lodged a police complaint. The police registered a case under sections 420,406 of IPC for fraud and forgery against the accused and arrested them, police said. The arrested accused include Bhura alias Mukesh, Durgabai alias Kalibai, , Babita alias Sandhya Thakur, and Jaswant Singh, all residents of Khandwa, police said.

Ratlam SP Gaurav Tiwari said, “Police arrested the four accused in the crime, and one is absconding. We are also investigating to know whether this was first such crime done by them or if others were performed by them in the past.”
