Madhya Pradesh: Covid cases down but don’t lower guard, warn experts

BHOPAL: Covid-19 cases continue to decrease in the state as less than 4,000 new cases were reported for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. Experts say it seems to be turning into endemic from pandemic but warn that we should not put our guards down as less is known about this virus even till now.

“It is definitely coming down, curve has flattened, though testing has also reduced but cases are also reducing. But still nothing should be taken from granted. Still we do not know much about the virus, hence there should be no complacency”, former director AIIMS Bhopal, professor Sarman Singh told TOI.

“Several countries have also made the use of mask voluntary which is unfortunate. The infection should be contained in the people in which it is three, chances of mutation of the virus increases with its spread from body to body so it should be contained”, he added.

“Nothing could be said definitely about the future, any new variant could be visible, or there may be even some new waves. But as of now it seems that the virus is moving from being pandemic to endemic, there could be a situation in future that it will be like other viral infections and high risk groups should be vaccinated for it”, he said.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Dr Lokendra Dave, head of pulmonary diseases department at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal.

“A lot depends on whether any new mutant is there and what is the human interaction with that mutant. But mostly the past experience of pandemic says that in 2-3 years when there is herd immunity, it turns into endemic, but we should be careful as it is a new disease and nothing definitely could be said. We do not exactly know the variation of the virus till now”, Dave told TOI.
