Madhya Pradesh: Congress MLA booked for abetment to suicide

BHOPAL: Congress MLA Ajab Singh Kushwah and four others have been booked in connection with a case of abetment to suicide in Morena district.

The case pertains to the suicide by property dealer Sitaram Sharma, who took poison outside the Congress MLA’s house on Monday night. He died in hospital 48 hours later, said police.

“We have filed an FIR on the basis of Sharma’s dying declaration and his son’s statement,” said SP Amit Sanghi. This is the 14th case registered against Kushwah in the last few years.

Kushwah, 50, had won Sumaoli in the November 2020 bypolls, defeating BJP’s Aidal Singh Kansana, who was among the 22 MLAs to quit Congress and switch to BJP in March that year.

Sharma’s son Manoj lodged a complaint against Kuswah, accusing him of having taken Rs 1.83 crore for a land deal. “Kushwah had developed colonies in Gwalior. According to the complaint, Sharma invested the money in his projects, which he later found to be illegal. When Kushwah refused to give possession of the plots, Sharma asked him to return the money but he allegedly didn’t,” said a police officer.

Police said that they will take legal advice before proceeding against the MLA. Among those booked in the case is his son-in-law Ranjeet Singh.
