BHOPAL: A senior railway officer posted in Itarsi region of Madhya Pradesh was arrested by the CBI’s anti-corruption branch (ACB) Bhopal in an alleged bribery case on Sunday evening.
An alumnus of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), officer Ajay Kumar Tamrakar, 40, was said to be caught red-handed by the officers inside his bungalow. He is posted as senior divisional mechanical engineer (DME) (diesel wing) as head of the department there.
Sources informed that CBI had received a complaint from a peon who was posted in his bungalow. The officer had removed him from his job a few days back and was demanding Rs 3.5 lakh for reinstating him, sources informed.
Peon kept pleading before him but he refused to give up and maintained on his demand. Harassed, he reported the matter to the CBI. After investigation when the demand was verified CBI team led by DySP Atul Hajela laid a trap. He was accompanied by inspectors – Satish Barwal, Abhishek Sonkar, Vijay Mehra, Himanshu Choubey and SI Subahs Tomar.
CBI arrested the officer under sections of PCT Act and conducted searches at official and residential premises. He was posted in Itarsi from February 2021.
Tamrakar was earlier posted in Bhopal as Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer from March 2016 - Feb 2015 years where he was Office-in-charge of the operation and freight wing of Mechanical department, consisting of wagon control, disaster management, wagon depots, ART, ARMV, SPART, EIMWB and WILD, Safety and Accident Inquiries, Diesel loco coordination, etc.
In 2015 he was posted as Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer in Jabalpur where he was assigned to support the maintenance of diesel locomotives in Diesel Sheds of WCR, monitor and control the reliability & effectiveness of WCR based diesel locomotives over IR.
This was his second posting in Itarsi. He was posted there as divisional mechanical engineer from Nov 2010 to Nov 2012 as Officer-in-Charge of resources for maintenance of diesel locomotives to Diesel Loco Shed, Itarsi of WCR, monitor and control the efficiency and effectiveness of Itarsi based diesel locomotives in train operations over Indian Railways.
He would be produced before local court on Monday.
