BHOPAL: A man set his five-year-old daughter on fire after his wife refused to return to his house.
She succumbed to burn injuries during treatment at government hospital in Gwalior. Incident took place in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh on July 5.
Manoj is an alcoholic and used to abuse and thrash his wife Sita in inebriated condition. Last week the couple had heated arguments over a domestic issue. She moved to her maternal house along with their daughter Naina.
On Tuesday Manoj went to her house and asked Sita to return home. Her refusal irked Manoj. Around 5:30 pm he went back with petrol and set Naina on fire before the family could have reached for help. He was arrested a few hours later.
Sita and her parents took Naina to a government hospital in Shivpuri, which referred her to Gwalior. She died after a few hours. Gwalior’s City Kotwali reached the hospital and recorded the statement of Manoj’s wife Sita.
Accused Manoj Jatav was initially arrested on charges of attempt to murder and produced before the local court which remanded him to judicial custody on Wednesday. Section 302 (murder) is being added, police say.
