Madhya Pradesh: 70-year-old shot dead by sons for land in Bhind, say police

BHOPAL: A 70-year-old man in MP’s Bhind was dragged from outside his house and shot dead, allegedly by two of his sons, who were furious with him for removing them from his will because he suspected them of poisoning their elder brother to death.

The family tragedy played out in Govind Nagar village on Saturday morning. Farmer Atbal Singh Yadav was sitting outside his house when his sons Sanjay and Dharamveer arrived, accompanied by two others. The four shouted abuses at him, dragged him from where he was sitting, and shot him four times at point blank range, police said. Atbal died on the spot. Hearing the gunshots, his wife and daughter-in-law ran out of the house but he was beyond help. Neighbours called Kotwali police station.

Police said Sanjay and Dharamveer had been pressuring their father to transfer the land in their names, but he steadfastly refused. His wife Shanti Devi has told investigators that Atbal had cut them out of his will. She says the duo had poisoned her eldest son, their brother, because they held a deep grudge against him.

Anguished, Atbal had decided to not to transfer his land in their names.

Police arrived an hour after the incident, say villagers. They recovered empty bullet casings and got a forensic team to inspect the crime scene. Police teams are out looking for the accused.
