Madeleine McCann suspect worked at Praia da Luz resort where she vanished

The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann had worked at and was very familiar with the resort where the family was staying, according to an upcoming documentary.

Christian Brueckner was identified as a suspect in the McCann investigation in June 2020, but officers have produced no definitive answers since 2007 when the three-year-old went missing.

In the documentary - which is due to air on German TV tonight - an anonymous witness claims that Brueckner was employed by a company that “repeatedly carried out repair work” at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz.

In a statement, film producers said evidence shows that Brueckner was “very familiar” with both the club and the town where the McCanns were staying 15 years ago.

A spokesperson for the German broadcaster told the Telegraph that: “A reconstruction of the evening of the crime and extensive research in Portugal and Germany found that Christian B was very familiar with the Ocean Club area in Praia da Luz.

“Prior to Maddie’s disappearance, he repeatedly carried out repair work at the place where the three-year-old disappeared in 2007.”

Christian Wolters, who is the public prosecutor leading the investigation in Germany, hailed the documentary filmmakers for sharing their findings with the public and say they will follow up on any leads that come from the documentary.

He said: “We are grateful to the SAT.1 team for sharing certain findings with the public prosecutor’s office.

“There are witnesses who might prefer to speak to the media than to us or the police. If this produces any ideas we will of course follow these up.”

The Metropolitan Police say their investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance - Operation Grange - remains active as a missing person inquiry and at this point, there is still no definitive evidence of whether she is alive or not.

Meanwhile, Brueckner’s lawyer Friedrich Fulscher continues to insist that his client had nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.
