Madeleine McCann search in Algarve called off after three days finding ‘nothing of consequence’

Investigators looking in to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have concluded their latest searches after three days.

Scores of police have been searcghing scrubland and an abandoned building near Praia da Luz with JCBs, radar and fingertip searches.

Police have said they turned up “nothing of consequence”.

The operation comes 18 years after three-year-old Madeleine disappeared from nearby Praia da Luz while on holiday with her family in 2007.

The British toddler vanished after she was left sleeping while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, went for dinner in a nearby restaurant.

Personnel have spent two days focusing on one particular derelict building, using a ground-penetrating radar on the cobbled ground after clearing the area of debris and vegetation using a digger and chainsaws.

German authorities requested the search as part of their continued attempts to source evidence to implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman inBritish officers have not been present at the latest searches, the Metropolitan Police said.

He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought.

Tents erected as part of the base area for investigators taking part in the searches connected to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann started to be taken down on Thursday.

Officers indicated they would be vacating the site later on Thursday afternoon and could be seen carrying equipment such as bins, boxes and folding tables away from their base area in Atalaia on the outskirts of Lagos.

Personnel also loaded vans, which were parked at the base area near to abandoned buildings, with some of the equipment used in the searches.

German and Portuguese investigators could be seen shaking hands and embracing as the searches drew to a close.

They stood in a circle for a debrief before they participated in a round of applause.

One officer could be seen carrying a crate of German lager away from a tent.

As the Augustiner beers and other items were removed from the tent, members of the search team appeared to struggle with taking parts of one of the tents down due to the blustery conditions in the area.

In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.

In 2023, investigators carried out searches near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz.

Brueckner spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017 and had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir.

British officers have not been present at the latest searches, the Metropolitan Police said.

Madeleine’s parents are not commenting during the “active police investigation”, staff at the Find Madeleine Campaign said.
