Madeleine McCann search could be axed after cops running £12m inquiry find 'no new leads'

A multi-million pound investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann could be called off due to a lack of new leads and cash.

A source close to the detectives on the case has revealed that Scotland Yard’s £12 million hunt for Madeleine has provided no ‘earth-shattering leads’.

They added that detectives rarely visit the Portuguese resort where she vanished in May 2007.

Madeleine McCann Christmas vow as Kate and Gerry McCann promise never to give up hope

The Home Office provided £150,000 cash last October to fund four detectives to work on Operation Grange until the end of this month.

The Metropolitan Police is understood to have sought a further £300,000, but a final decision appears to be up in the air.

The source told The Mail on Sunday: "Most of what Operation Grange is doing is having things set up to knock down and rule out, rather than pursuing a particular fantastic lead that could unlock it all. I’m not aware of any earth-shattering lead or breakthrough imminently."

A Met spokesman said: "The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann remains ongoing."

A spokesman for the McCanns said: "Kate and Gerry remain incredibly grateful to the Metropolitan Police and the Home Office for the continued work they are doing."

The Home Office confirmed to the Mail on Sunday it had received a request to extend funding for Operation Grange and was in talks with the Met.

Madeleine, then aged just three-years-old, vanished from her bed in a holiday apartment in Algarve, Portugal, in 2007 shortly before her fourth birthday.

She was sleeping with her two siblings as Kate and Gerry McCann were dining at a restaurant with friends within the Ocean Club.

Since then, she has become the most recognised and talked about missing child in the world.
