Madeira tourist coach crash: '28 dead' after vehicle veers off road

At least 28 people are reported to have died after a coach crashed on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

The coach was carrying 57 passengers, understood to have been German tourists, when it careered off the road and smashed onto the top of a house this afternoon.

Locals have said the driver lost control of the vehicle on a bend, the Mirror reports.

Filipe Sousa, mayor of Santa Cruz is reported to have told local media that 28 people have died. The casualties have been described as 11 men and 17 women.

Pictures from the scene show the vehicle on its side. Video also shows people being carried away on stretchers by firefighters.

It is understood passengers are still being removed from the coach.

The incident happened near a botanical garden in the hotel district in Canico, a quiet coastal community in the south-east of Madeira.

At least 14 ambulances are said to be at the scene, near the Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden hotel.

A massive cordon has been set up, while shocked locals have gathered nearby.

Portuguese media are saying there are “several dead” although it is not immediately clear if the casualties are foreign tourists on the coach or were in the house.

A receptionist at Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden, which is a hotel set in a large expense of landscaped botanical gardens, confirmed the incident had happened very near to the hotel but said it did not involve any guests.

Distressing video showed the walking wounded being helped away from the scene by emergency responders.

Several survivors were sat by the side of the road.
