Madeira bus crash: At least 29 people have died after tourist bus crashes into house

At least 29 tourists have died and 28 others injured following a bus crash in Maderia.

The bus rolled down a steep hillside and careered off the road on a bend east of the capital, Funchal, into a house below.

A total of 55 people were on board the bus, of which 18 women and 11 men died.

It is believed that those who died were German, according to reports from Portuguese foreign minister, Augusto Santos Silva.

However not all of the victims have been identified and Tomasia Alves, head of the Funchal hospital, refused to confirm the nationality of the dead.

Vice president of Madeira's regional government, Pedro Calado, confirmed those injured in the crash, including the Portugese driver and the local tour guide, were taken to hospital.

The German foreign ministry said in a tweet: "We must unfortunately assume that victims are from Germany."

It's understood the incident happened near a botanical garden in the hotel district in Canico, a quiet coastal community in the south-east of the island, known as Canico de Baixo.

Witnesses report seeing more than a dozen ambulances at the scene, as well as a large number of other emergency response vehicles.

Calado, the regional government's vice president, said the bus was five years old and had passed its mandatory inspections. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We are seeking information from the authorities in Portugal about a bus crash in Madeira, and are ready to support any British people who require assistance."

Three days of mourning has been announced by Madeira's regional government.
