Made in Manchester: The Red Stains

WHO ARE THEY?

The Manchester band most likely to inspire a whole generation of guitar-wielding girl groups. Feisty, fun and ferocious, all-female quartet The Red Stains have been kicking up a storm on Manchester’s DIY scene with their no-nonsense take on post-punk, glam, new wave and Riot grrrl. Their sound is ramshackle, meandering and determinedly lo-fi – but, proving that charm will always overcome technical prowess, it’s hard not to be seduced by their freewheeling, girl-gang energy.

Especially when you listen to the likes of Trolley Dashers, a track which combines unvarnished, adolescent energy with the sort of surreal, scabrous humour Mark E Smith would have been proud of. If you've bagged yourself a ticket for Retro Bar's R-Fest spectacular this weekend, make sure you put The Red Stains at the top of your must-see list.
