Made in Manchester: Little Ralph

WHO IS SHE?

A 21-year-old rapper who first caught our attention when she appeared on the Etta Bond-fronted YouTube documentary, Beneath The Surface, exploring the connections between musicians and mental health. Speaking with incredible candour, the Mancunian MC and producer (born: Sophie Ralph), reflected on her own battles with mental illness, and her belief that music can help with that therapeutic process.

Such raw, disarming honesty lies at the very heart of Little Ralph’s music – a heady mix of grime, trap and electro powered by Ralph’s rapid-fire flow and intensely diaristic lyrics. She’s been making music since the age of 16, but it’s her more recent tracks – Complicated, Ex Ting, How Do You Feel, as found on her Soundcloud page – that suggest Little Ralph is now coming of age as a lyricist and performer. Whether she’s rapping about life goals, matters of the heart or the perils of social media, she’s always a fantastically charismatic storyteller, whilst her slickly-produced tunes are stuffed with monstrous pop hooks and dancefloor sensibility. One to watch.
