Made in Manchester - Lewis James

WHO IS HE?

The Mancunian artist most likely to throw you a musical curveball. First emerging on the local scene around a year ago, young Lewis James describes himself as a rapper and spoken word artist – that summation doesn't, however, really convey the remarkable depth and scope of the music he creates. Propelled by his visceral, heartfelt rhymes, Lewis James constantly keeps you on your toes with his unpredictable, kaleidoscopic songwriting – one minute he's dabbling in heavyweight hip-hop, the next visceral electro, before segueing into lo-fi, soulful sounds. Self-released in October last year, his debut LP How Can You Be Sad When You're High and You're Dancing is just as likely to provoke scenes of headbanging as it is people swaying their lighters and phones in the air. Both of those scenarios, we suspect, will be occurring at his Night & Day Café show next week – a most perfect way to kickstart your 2020 gigging calendar.
