Made in Manchester: KinKai

WHO IS HE?

A Mancunian poet and rapper who’ll no doubt be gaining many new admirers when he performs in Albert Square next week as part of a special MIF19 event.

Of course, amongst Manchester’s urban music community, KinKai is a man who needs no introduction. A hugely respected figure on the Manc music scene, KinKai has, over the past few years, chalked up an impressive amount of collaborations with the likes of Mouse Outfit, LayFullStop, Children of Zeus and, most prominently, the hugely gifted producer Glue70.

All those collaborations, plus his experiences on the Manc live circuit, have clearly fed into his wonderful, dynamic solo material. Last year’s acclaimed release, Mellow Mermaids & Malibu, showcased an artist who’s seamlessly bridging the worlds of hip-hop old-school and new-school. Despite drawing from an eclectic, wide-ranging sound palette – jazz, ambient, electronica and driving hip-hop beats – there’s a real economy to his songcraft, thanks to his robust melodies and precise, no-nonsense flow and wordplay.

Fresh from performing at the massive Feel The Vibe dance event, in Prague last month, he’s now back for a special appearance at MIF19 – go along and give him a rapturous hometown reception.
