A Manchester trio who, in a recent interview, cited Fugazi and The Cranberries as two of their biggest musical influences. Of course, if you've had the pleasure of hearing Crying Beauty Queens' music, those disparate influences make total sense – here's a band whose appeal lies in their deft understanding of contrasts, blending the visceral and the genteel to create a unique sound of their own. Their third and latest single Stupid, released last month, perfectly encapsulates this sonic worldview. While dramatic tension is provided by the driving, emo-infused guitars and feverish percussion, singer Jordan Price's beautiful vocals – which evoke the sensuous lilt of the late, great Dolores O'Riordan – provide a lovely counterpoint. A band trading in big sounds and big emotions but never neglecting that all-important sense of intimacy, Crying Beauty Queens have all the essential qualities to connect with a mass audience.
