“Madden NFL 20” ratings for 49ers defense

The 49ers defense improved on paper at their biggest position of need, but inactivity at other spots makes this unit a question mark in 2019. Their “Madden 20” ratings reflect just how shaky the 49ers are on the defensive side going into 2019.

Here’s a complete look at the 49ers defense and their initial overall Madden ratings after their Monday release:

Interior defensive line

Buckner’s rating pushes him out of the top five overall at his position, but still makes him the fourth-highest rated 49er, which could easily change with another big season in 2019. Armstead has a chance to really climb if he produces on the interior with the additional edge help from Dee Ford and Nick Bosa.

Defensive ends

Speaking of Ford and Bosa, they’re the 49ers’ two best defensive ends. Thomas’ inclusion in this group probably doesn’t help his grade much. It’ll be interesting to see what he does on the field with more time on the inside. There’s a chance one of Taylor, Lewis-Moore or Street have a breakout training camp that gives them a nice boost in an updated edition of the ratings.

Linebackers

There’s nothing egregious in the linebacker group, although Fred Warner may see his rating climb if he picks up where he left off last season. The biggest number that stands out here is Greenlaw’s 63 overall mark. He’s a potential starter who should be much better than that initial rating.

Cornerbacks

This is a relatively shallow group from a numbers standpoint, and the Madden version of Verrett is probably indicative of the level he’d perform at if healthy all season. Ward’s inclusion among the cornerbacks is strange since he’ll play safety this season. Williams was very effective in the slot last year and should see himself get a bump if the 49ers pass defense improves overall. Sherman is the highest-rated 49er.

Safeties

Madden’s ratings reflect the less-than-ideal state of the 49ers secondary. Tartt is by far the highest-rated player and he’s not even a surefire starter. Getting elevated play from any two players at safety will be a must if the San Francisco defense is going to improve this season. It’s also a must if they’re going to be a viable video game option. Look for Moore to see a significant jump if he earns a starting job out of camp.
