Madani Younis to step down as creative director of the Southbank Centre

Madani Younis is to leave Southbank Centre after less than a year as creative director.

Younis was previously artistic director of the Bush Theatre for six years and left to take up the new position in January.

The post was newly created for Younis to work alongside Hayward Gallery director Ralph Rugoff and director of music Gillian Moore, coinciding with the departure of former boss Jude Kelly.

He said he is leaving to “pursue other creative interests in the coming months,'' adding that he is “pleased to have been able to set in motion a number of creative projects with the help of the talented team around me during my time with Southbank Centre”.

Since joining the organisation, he has overseen the outdoor summer programme, which celebrated LGBTQ+ artists, and an upcoming project, London is Love, which celebrates south London communities through the photography of Liz Johnson Artur.

Southbank Centre chief executive Elaine Bedell said: “We have enjoyed working with Madani and he has made a significant and positive contribution to discussions about our future creative direction. We wish him well for the future.”

Younis departs from the role in December 2019.
