Mad scramble at Leeds McDonald’s as 50 drivers queue for drive thru orders ahead of 7pm deadline

A huge queue of people were spotted waiting in their cars at a McDonald’s drive thru in Leeds this lunchtime just hours before the fast food chain closes all its restaurants.

The global fast food giant announced on Sunday that it would be closing more than 1,000 of its franchises across the country in line with the government's advice to shut down restaurants, cafés, pubs and other public places. The closure come into effect at 7pm today (Monday).

The attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus has seen businesses severely impacted and McDonald’s is no exception - but it seems as though people have been desperate to get their hands on one last Big Mac before the temporary closure.

The picture at the top of this story shows roughly 50 cars nose-to-tail at the Horsforth McDonald’s at around 1.30pm, with the traffic backing up onto A660 Outer Ring Road in both directions.

The scenes were the same at the Kirkstall McDonald’s, with the queues snaking out of the car park at Cardigan Fields.

Similar queues have also been spotted at other McDonald’s drive thrus across the country.

The chain had initially closed the seating areas in McDonald’s restaurants, but people were allowed to go in to pick up takeaway orders. McDelivery and drive thru options were also available - but these have now also been shut down, with no date confirmed for when any of the restaurants will reopen.
