Mad rush for McDonald’s in Edinburgh forces police to intervene as hundreds queue

Police were forced to intervene as long queues formed outside a McDonald's restaurant in Edinburgh this morning as the burger chain re-opened local outlets for drive-thru.

Restaurants in the west of Edinburgh and in West Lothian saw lengthy drive-thru queues as drivers flocked to get their fast food fix.

At one store in Newbridge staff said over 120 people had been through in the first hour since opening.

McDonald's is opening its stores in a staggered way, with all the branches in one area opening at the same time, to try and spread the customer load.

Despite this staff had to separate the dense traffic into several lanes to try and contain the queues.

However the store, which sits at a services off junction 1 of the M9 saw traffic backing up onto the roundabout.

Police came to speak with staff as the jams began to lengthen.

Staff and traffic cops had to position themselves at the end of the queue to turn drivers away so the line of cars didn't obstruct traffic on the roundabout.

Despite the lengthy lines staff said the wait time was only around 15-20 minutes and customers were overjoyed to get their hands on their favourite snacks again.

"It was a little quieter this morning," reported one member of staff on traffic duty.

"But the minute McDonald's put up their posts on social media saying we had re-opened it got busy."

She added that the kitchen was fully prepared, and they were not expecting to run out of anything.

Describing customers' high spirits she said: "People have been really happy, we had two guys in a van just now singing and shouting, it was brilliant." Another member of staff explained:

"People like it because it's a sign things are getting back to normal. It's the same with the tips opening or Ikea opening - it's a return to normality for people."

Staff were running up and down the queue getting drivers to close gaps and allow more customers to join the queue - despite being extremely busy they seemed in good spirits, "its madness" said one, "but it's good to be back".
