Mad Max: Fury Road (15)
(George Miller, 2015, Aus/US) Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult. 120 mins
Harking back to the post-apocalyptic future of the 1980s, Miller’s reboot cuts to the chase, puts its foot down, and takes you on a raucous heavy-metal joyride. There’s barely a stationary moment, as Hardy and Theron hurtle through a desert landscape of fire, dust, malevolent tribes and exuberantly customised vehicles, but the chaos is always coherent – often beautifully so.
Pitch Perfect 2 (12A)
(Elizabeth Banks, 2015, US) Anna Kendrick. 115 mins
It’s back to the start for the girls’ a cappella comedy, in a sequel that recycles its predecessor’s strengths and gives the Bellas another comeback competition, this time against a comically stereotypical German troupe.
Clouds Of Sils Maria (15)
(Olivier Assayas, 2014, Fra/Swi/Ger/US/Bel) Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart. 124 mins
A clash of generations and acting styles in this intelligent luvvie drama, as Binoche agonises over taking an older woman’s role, while her assistant (Stewart) provides support, friction and erotic distraction.
A Royal Night Out (12A)
(Julian Jarrold, 2015, UK) Sarah Gadon, Jack Reynor, Emily Watson. 97 mins
Young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret have a spiffing VE Day adventure, slipping their chaperones to party like common people. It’s fanciful monarchy-ogling in The King’s Speech vein, but Gadon is very good.
The Tribe (18)
(Miroslav Slaboshpitsky, 2014, Ukr/Neth) Grigoriy Fesenko, Yana Novikova. 132 mins
A deaf teen’s ascent of a peer group pecking order is described without dialogue or subtitles in this audacious sign-language drama. It’s expertly choreographed, but often raw and violent.
Lambert And Stamp (15)
(James D Cooper, 2014, US) 117 mins
The Who’s story told via their accidental but formative management duo – with archive clips, horse’s mouth testimony and a great soundtrack. More an emotional journey than a straight musicology.
A Fuller Life (15)
(Samantha Fuller, 2013, US) James Franco, Mark Hamill, Wim Wenders. 80 mins
Read out by former colleagues and admirers, supplemented with archive footage, Samuel Fuller’s eventful memoir (crime reporter, war veteran, Hollywood rebel) makes for a superior bio-doc.
Bombay Velvet (15)
(Anurag Kashyap, 2015, Ind) Ranbir Kapoor. 149 mins
The Gangs Of Wasseypur director recreates the style and sounds of Mumbai’s 1960s jazz age, where a street fighter embarks on a Scarface-like criminal trajectory.
The Man Who Saved The World (15)
(Peter Anthony, 2014, Den) Stanislav Petrov, Kevin Costner. 110 mins
Hollywood and Russian actors pitch in to tell the chilling semi-documentary story of the Soviet officer who averted an accidental nuclear war.
Only Angels Have Wings (U)
(Howard Hawks, 1939, US) Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Rita Hayworth. 118 mins
Restored version of Hawks’s entertaining romance, set within a precarious South American aviation outfit that laughs (and cries) in the face of health and safety.
