Mad Max director says new film will be a prequel, but won't star Charlize Theron

The next Mad Max film will be a prequel focusing on Charlize Theron's character, Furiosa.

In an interview with The New York Times, director George Miller confirmed that Theron would not be returning to play the younger version of the character.

She originated the role in the widely acclaimed 2014 film Mad Max: Fury Road.

Miller claimed that he had considered using digital de-aging technology to bring Theron back, but decided against it: “Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”

According to Variety, Miller is considering Split actor Anya Taylor-Joy for the part of the younger Furiosa.

Several of Fury Road's key behind-the-camera staff will be returning, however, including production designer Colin Gibson and cinematographer John Seale.

Fury Road won praise for its expertly choreographed action sequences, eye-catching aesthetic and tactile practical effects, and is often cited as among the best action films of the 21st century.
