'Mad' camping pitch spotted just yards from railway track in Snowdonia

Wild campers in Snowdonia have been criticised for their unusual choice of pitch.

Photos of a tent set up just yards from tracks at the Llanberis Lake Railway caused concerns over the weekend.

Social media users had their say on the potentially dangerous spot on a number of local Facebook pages, North Wales Live reports.

Writing on the Llanberis Community Forum, Ian Hughes said: "(This) takes the meaning of railway sleepers to a whole new level."

And Kyle Collins added in Welsh this takes "train spotting to a new level".

Despite Luce Kanon not having a problem with camping as long as the area is left clean, he added: "Bit of a mad place to pitch up considering Fachwen is right there."

Chris Rose-Thomas said simply: "Be nesa?", which translates to "whatever next?".

The Llanberis Lake Railway runs regular services along the shores of Llyn Padarn from its base at Gilfach Ddu to the terminus at Pen Llyn, nearly three miles from Llanberis.

North Wales Live has contacted Llanberis Lake Railway for a comment.

Wild camping is illegal in Wales but has become widespread this summer due to the higher demand for hotels, guesthouses, holiday parks and camping sites.

Many people have been turning to 'staycations' as an alternative summer holiday due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.
