Stockport County fans line the streets for victory parade

Thousands of fans lined the streets of Stockport to celebrate their club’s first league title in 52 years.

The Hatters basked in their success with an open top parade through the town in glorious sunshine on Sunday.

They sealed the National League North title with a 3-0 win at Nuneaton last month.

Stockport fans of all ages turned out to give Jim Gannon and his men a hero's welcome, showering the team with cheers, chants and blue smoke as the victory parade made its way to the ground.

It was a moment lifelong Hatters fan Jack Birch, 90, wouldn’t have missed for the world.

Jack, of Hazel Grove, who goes to games with his son Stephen, said: “The club means absolutely everything to us.

“Football is like a religion in our family. We’ve been patronising the club for years and years.

“My dad was a football fan and so was my grandfather. I was brought here as a boy in 1937 and I’ve been coming to watch them ever since.

“This season has been absolutely amazing. We’ve waited eight years for this and now we’ve finally achieved it.

“To see them achieve this is marvelous. I can’t tell you how much it means to me.”

Fans praised County legend Jim Gannon for sharing the team's success with the community.

Ilse Collinge, 56, said: “It’s a real family club, Stockport.

“They want success but not at any cost. A lot of big clubs are all about money, money, money but this club is about putting that success back into the community.

“Someone once asked me why I support Stockport when you’ve got United and City up the road, and I said it’s my local club and I want the best for them.”

Pal Linda Oates, 58, added: “The way they’ve gone around all the schools to show kids the trophy is brilliant. They’ve really made everyone feel part of it.

“They’ve given back to the community for as long as I can remember.”

It was a family day out for Beryl Smith, 78, her daughter Karen Philips, 47 and grandkids Louise, seven, and Thomas, 10.

“The kids are very excited because they got to hold the trophy with Jim Gannon at Edgeley Park this morning,” said Karen.

“He’s an absolute legend. You feel like they appreciate everyone’s support.”

Thomas added: “I think it’s a really good opportunity for the players to gather with the fans. We can see the trophy and see what they’ve actually won.”

The title win ended County's six-year stay in the sixth tier of English football.

It's the second time Gannon has led County to promotion, after taking them up to League two via play-offs in 2008.
